Seven Decades of Academic Excellence (1953–2025)

The history of the Faculty of Economic Sciences began in 1953 with the issuance of the Order of the Ministry of Culture of the USSR “On the Establishment of the Faculty of Economics at Chișinău State University.” The establishment of the Faculty was driven by the urgent need to train nationally qualified specialists in economic analysis and planning. The primary mission of the newly established Faculty was to prepare highly qualified professionals for the industrial, financial, and credit sectors.

The Founding Decade (1953–1963)

The first graduating class, in 1958, marked the beginning of the systematic education of economists in the Republic. The graduates actively contributed to addressing economic and financial challenges while making a significant contribution to the advancement of economic science. They became the pioneers of the national school of economics, playing an important role in the development of the Republic’s economy during a period of profound socio-economic transformation.

Consolidation and Growth (1964–1990)

Throughout the following decades, the Faculty strengthened its position within Moldova’s higher education system, expanded its portfolio of academic programmes, and educated specialists who worked across virtually all sectors of the national economy. Academic specializations continued to diversify, while the teaching staff was reinforced by highly qualified professionals with extensive academic and practical experience in economics.

The Period of Transformation (1991–2002)

Following the declaration of independence of the Republic of Moldova in 1991, the Faculty entered a period of profound transformation, adapting to the requirements of a market economy and the new realities of the educational system. It was on the basis of the Faculty of Economics of Moldova State University that the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova (ASEM) was established in 1991. In 2002, the Faculty of Economic Sciences was re-established within Moldova State University, marking the beginning of a new stage of development focused on integration into the European Higher Education Area.

Development and Internationalization (2003–2025)

Over the years, the Faculty has become one of the University’s largest academic units, distinguished by a well-established organizational structure and a modern educational system aligned with labour market demands. Despite occasional objective interruptions caused by historical circumstances, the Faculty has consistently preserved its core mission of educating highly qualified professionals and fostering the national economic elite. Academic programmes, teaching methods, and university infrastructure have been continuously modernized in accordance with the standards of contemporary higher education.

Current Structure

The Faculty currently comprises four academic departments: the Department of Business Administration; the Department of Finance and Banking; the Department of Accounting and Economic Informatics; and the Department of Economics, Marketing and Tourism.

The Faculty also hosts two research centres: the Scientific Research Centre “Sustainable Development and Economic Performance” and the Centre for Economic Studies and Research.

Today, the Faculty of Economic Sciences is recognized both nationally—as one of the leading centres for professional education and scientific research in economics and business administration—and internationally, where it serves as a reliable partner and provider of high-quality education and research. Throughout its history, the Faculty has educated numerous generations of professionals who have successfully built their careers both in the economy of the Republic of Moldova and abroad.

Educational Programmes

The Faculty offers six Bachelor’s degree programmes: Business and Administration; Accounting; Finance and Banking; Marketing and Logistics; Hotel Services, Tourism and Leisure; and World Economy and International Economic Relations.

The Faculty also offers eleven Master’s degree programmes: Business Administration; Banking Administration; Audit and Financial Expertise; Enterprise Accounting; Public Finance and Taxation; Financial Management and Business Accounting; Marketing Studies; Hotel Management and Marketing and Tourism; Human Resource Management; Databases and Actuarial Techniques; and Management. All academic programmes are nationally and/or internationally accredited, including ACCA (United Kingdom) accreditation for the Accounting programme.

Graduates of the Master’s degree programmes may continue their studies at the doctoral level in the scientific field of Economic Sciences, within the following scientific profiles: Economics, Business and Administration; and Finance, Accounting and Economic Analysis.

International Partnerships and Double Degree Programmes

Under the Institutional Agreement with Ștefan cel Mare University of Suceava (Romania), students have the opportunity to obtain double degrees in the Bachelor’s programme Finance and Banking, the Master’s programme Audit and Financial Expertise, and to pursue doctoral studies under the cotutelle (joint doctoral supervision) system.

This cooperation promotes academic mobility, strengthens international scientific collaboration, and contributes to the education of specialists with internationally recognized competencies.
